My First Ironman

I have been doing triathlons for the past 5 years. Just like most of us, I got my introduction at Tri for Fun.  Right after the race in August 2006, I joined FMRC and met a lot of wonderful athletes and started doing more triathlons, and progressed to Sprint, Olympic, and Half Ironmans.  I have also done half marathons and marathons etc.  But, I knew I had to be physically and mentally ready to do the full Ironman.  I pulled the trigger last year in November and signed up for IM Arizona. The goal for IMAZ -- finish the race with…

Oceanside 70.3

This was my first time racing Oceanside 70.3.  This race is 1 month before Ironman St. George.  I am hoping it is a good race and training day for me. Result: 5:13:32  (swim 34:26, bike 2:47:12, run 1:45:41); AG (40-44) 13th Pre-Race:I woke up Saturday morning at 4:30. I had an almond butter and jam sandwich (wheat bread) for breakfast and coffee. I was out the door riding to the start at by 5:45. My family stayed in condo real close to the start and right on the run course. It was perfect. I set up my transition spot and…

Ironman St George Race Report

Dora Jih 05/07/11 3rd Ironman Summary: Time:  12:06 (40-44 AG, 6th) - Swim:  1:11 (AG 10th), Bike:  6:06 (AG 5th), Run:  4:32 (AG 7th) I felt pretty calm during the days leading up to race day.  My coach suggested that I race Ironman St. George last year because he believed a hard course is best suited for me.  He told me this after Ironman Coeur d’Alene last year when I set myself up for a great day with the swim and bike but I lost the mental ability to “race” the run. He encouraged me to race St. George because…

Ironman Canada

August 28, 2011This year’s trip to Penticton, B.C. was a special one for me. I raced Ironman Canada in 2007. It was my first Ironman and I learned at the finish line on 8/26/2007 that “I am made for this (Ironman)” – these are the first words I said to Sam, my husband, when I crossed the finish line 4 years ago. In 2007, I felt like I did all 3 sports with ease and had the time of my life, shocking myself to finish in 11:49. I hoped to finish in less than 13 hours and I finished under…

The Warm Days of Summer Running

by Michael Stella, Director of RunningWell, a couple unfortunate things happened this past month. First, Allie Bigelow moved to North Carolina. For those of you who don’t know Allie, she was one of our fastest runners. She also brought a bright smile and colorful shoes to every workout and race. I know many of us who trained and raced with her were sorry to see her go. Let’s all wish her well in her future adventures. Second, Ralph Gowen beat me again!  He beat me in Boston, and then again at the Fast & Furious 5K.  What’s up with that? …

Back-to-Back Blunders

By John FultonThere are two types of cyclists: A)     Those who have crashed and those who will crash B)     Those who have bonked and those who will bonk C)     All of the above. After the last couple of weeks, I am going with “C”. I could say I have had a bit of bad luck the last couple of weeks on the bike, but it was far more the result of carelessness than luck. On a beautiful Saturday morning, about eight of us met up in Windsor to pre ride the Vineman course. About 35 miles into  the 55 mile…

COEUR D’ALENE 2011 – RACE REPORT

by Chuck Ojeda SO WHAT WAS IT LIKE IN COEUR D’ALENE – YOU KNOW – OVERALL? If Forrest Gump’s mother had raced Ironman Coeur D’Alene June 26th 2011, she would have changed her observation to “IM CDA is like a box o’ chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get”. A Calm Coeur D’Alene Lake – The Day After Race Past CDA race days give no significant indication what you might encounter weatherwise on race day.  Should you plan for this race, you really just take the elements as they come.  This sage advice was passed to me, so…

On Your Left

by Tom GlynnAs someone said, things never really go as planned or quite as you imagined.

It's incredibly hard to believe that I was in a hospital 10 months ago recovering from a destroyed hip socket after a bad bike accident.Who qualifies for Kona with a 1:39 swim, a leisurely bike ride of 0.67 IF and running 9:30+ minute miles? Me! I'm still expecting a call telling me they got the paperwork wrong and I didn't really qualify. I came out of the water and looked at the clock. Could I really be that bad - again? Yup! 1750th place,…

2 B2B or Not 2 B2B

By Jeff DurbanHave you ever had someone mention or recommend some event, a running race, a concert, a triathlon, or a movie that sounds really good at the time of the mention, you commit to said event, but when reality wipes away the fog, you are usually faced with a monumental lapse of judgment and decision making? I would count my decision to enter the Boston to Big Sur Challenge as one of those said lapses. The B2B, as it is affectionately called, is the act of running the Boston Marathon and then less than two weeks later, running the…

The Road to Boston Goes Through Camarillo

by Jeff DurbanThe parallels between my qualifying marathon, the Camarillo Marathon in Southern California, and the international athletic mega-event, the Adidas Boston Marathon are simply uncanny.• Boston had 27,000 participants; Camarillo has a population of 27,000 people.• Boston had five hundred thousand spectators lining the course while Camarillo had five hundred thousand tomato, strawberry, and onion plants growing along the route.• Boston participants ran in shoes. For the most part, Camarillo participants ran in shoes.• Each race had its unique cast of characters; Boston had the Gorilla Guy, the Caveman, the Jester, Celtic cheerleaders, and the dude in the pink…

Boston Report

by Todd ToffoliThe 2011 Boston Marathon was a race unlike any other in the 115-year history of the course. From the 7-hour sellout on October 18 to Geoffrey Mutai’s phenomenal 2:03:02 finish, the event was an eye-opener for the sporting world. Some 30 members of our Forward Motion Race Club made the pilgrimage this year from our stronghold on the West coast to the birthplace of the American marathon. This race was a very special one for me, as both my dad and I made triumphant returns to Boston this year, he having last run it in 1982.TrainingI started to…

Boston Marathon

At Campo di Bocce, Sunday, April 10 for the last long run pre Boston!! Only 8 days until race day. There are a couple ways to track our teams from home on race day Monday April 18th (Patriots Day in Massachusetts).

First, Universal Sports Television broadcasts the race live both on their website and on their TV network. The best chance to see us is at the start as the cameras pan over the crowd. After that, you'll be treated to a couple epic showdowns as Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher try to unseat the favorites from Africa for a U.S.…
