Steve Chavez
Vice-president
This
is my third year on the Board of Directors as Vice President for FMRC.
As a member of the board during these years we have worked hard to grow
the club/team atmosphere. Offering group workouts, clinics, sponsorship
, philanthropic ventures etc to the members. We have thrived to build
something very unique. The best part has been encouraging all members
to get involved and then seeing it actually happen. When you join FMRC
you truly become part of a family. To find me before races, I am
usually the one lugging the team tent and table all over the place as
my wife volunteers "us" to do that at many races. (She never once has
to lug that heavy tent, just sayin').
I have been running
with Forward Motion Sports since the store opened in San Ramon over 20
years ago. (I attended the very 1st Wednesday night run many years ago).
I
have been a member of FMRC since it was created in 2003. I am currently
in
my 4th year as a member of the FMRC Elite team.
Growing up I
played basketball, snow skied and water skied. I started running in my
late 20's and became a triathlete in my early 30's. My favorite
running race is Wharf to Wharf in Santa Cruz and my favorite triathlon
is a toss up between Ironman Coeur d'Alene or Ironman Lake Placid.
I have been able to share
my passion for a healthy lifestyle with my wife Carrie (club member).
Janet Tsuji
Secretary
I am new to FMRC, joining in April of 2009. Unlike most of our other board members, I am pretty new to all three sports. I'd been working out at the gym for a few years and was getting bored so I decided early last year that I wanted to do a triathlon...to shake things up and to prove to myself that I wasn't getting old! The only problem was that I didn't own a bike, couldn't swim a stroke and was a pretty poor runner. Thankfully, I stumbled across Pamela's newbie triathlete program...and, as the old saying goes, the rest is history! I am totally in love with this sport now and can't get enough of it. I started with the 2009 Tri for Fun series and managed to work my way up to the Big Kahuna (my first half Ironman) this past September, thanks to all the support, training and encouragement that I have received from my fellow team mates. A couple short months ago, I said I would never even attempt a full IM...but, here I am, contemplating that very thing. Maybe IM Lake Placid or Canada in 2012?
I can't say enough good things about this club. It has given me so much in such a short period of time and I would like to give a little something back by joining the BOD.
Suresh Donthineni
Treasurer
I have just joined the Board in 2010 and took over from Larry "The Swimmer" Feigenbaum. I am a CPA by profession, and grew up playing Cricket (yes, that's right!!), Table Tennis or Ping Pong, Squash (i was playing in the county leagues in England), and ended up in San Diego surfing more than studying Economics. When I moved to the Bay Area, I took up cycling, and got hooked on triathlons after doing the Tri for Fun.
I joined FMRC in early 2007, and have learned a lot from other members. It's hard to say which is my favorite race, since they are all different -- Escape from Alcatraz definitely gave me confidence in my swimming ability, and Oceanside Half taught me that the last guy always picks up the cones!!! Given my chaotic work and family schedule, I am still trying to decide which Full Ironman to attempt.....and hopefully not be the guy picking up the cones.......
Michael Stella
Director of Running
I’m honored to take over as Director of Running for 2011 from my best bud and training partner, Tara Carreira. She and I have trained and raced together for a number of years, and I’m continually inspired by her passion for running and competing. I’m hopeful I can live up to the standard Tara has set, and am happy to see her shift her focus to the Elite team this year.
Now, a bit about me. Although I’ve been running and competing for many years and get chastised for the number of race T-shirts I’ve accumulated, my role in the club has evolved into what I refer to as the ‘ultimate domestique’. In cycling jargon, this makes me the guy who shepherds water to the team leaders at the front of the peloton, or creates a slipstream in the wind for those riding behind. In running terms, this means, I’m there to support YOU. My greatest joy comes from training hard with my teammates, and then pacing one of them to a podium finish or to a PR at a target race.
I’m certified as a Level 1 Coach through U.S.A. Track & Field, and can offer you technical advice built upon years of training and racing. I’ve also competed at many of the local races and several prominent marathons, so I can tell you what to expect going in. More importantly, though, I can offer you a friendly face who loves organizing group workouts, or getting up early to join others for a run. I live in Pleasanton and work in Danville, so you’re likely to see me at many of the team workouts each week, including workouts on the bike and in the water. Please say hello when you see me.
Josh Weiss
Co-Director of Cycling
While my athletic abilities first showed themselves in the fifth grade (I was the school potato sack race champion), I didn't start running for real until the age of 13. I've run competitively on and off for most of my life, and caught the triathlon bug maybe seven or eight years ago. The Tri for Fun was my first tri, and I quickly worked my way up the distance ladder, eventually becoming infatuated with the ironman distance. I've completed IM Coeur d'Alene three times, and it's my favorite tri. I also recently completed the Markleeville Death Ride with my wife, Janna, and it was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended for anyone who likes ultra-distance bike rides.
Although I started as a runner, cycling is my favorite of the three sports, and I love teaching and encouraging folks to take up the sport and reach their athletic potential. It's one of those wonderful activities that a wide range of people can enjoy and participate in for their whole lives, and leading the Saturday group ride is one of my favorite parts of the week.
Jeff Durban
Co-Director of Cycling
As co-director of cycling for FMRC, my emphasis has been on shepherding the fledgling race team through its first two race seasons. I started riding seriously as a pre-teen going on 800-900 mile tours with the YMCA graduating to a camp counselor and ride leader for the Y in high school. I started racing bikes in college for the UC San Diego Tritons after surviving two years of 5AM workouts with the crew team. The 7AM bike team roll-outs seemed much better adapted to a college kid's schedule.
I've been riding and racing in some form or fashion ever since with forays into Mt. Biking, endurance races, triathlon, track, and cyclecross. My first love is still criterium racing, but fear of mortality and wanting to be able to ride with my boys have tempered my dreams of criterium glory.
Janine, my wife, and I have been proud members of FMRC since 2005 when we raced with Chris McCrary at Ironman Canada and saw first hand the level of support he received from the club. We are raising our twin boys, Jake and Josh, to embrace and hopefully participate, in the multisport lifestyle.
Pamela Herbert
Co-director, Triathlon
I have been a
member of FMRC since 2006 when I found myself being cheered on and
encouraged by a lot of people wearing clothing that said "Forward
Motion" on it while racing the Tri for Real. I had been training alone
and thought it might be fun to join the club and find some athletic
buddies and I was right.
I joined the Board of Directors in
2008 as the Director of Communications and in 2009 I became the
Co-Director of Triathlon. I also founded the New Triathlete Program
even though I was, myself, sort of a new triathlete. I love FMRC for
the camaraderie, the friends I've made, the support and of course, the
parties.
Valentina Holroyd
Social Director
I joined the FMRC Board two years ago. I've been an athlete most of my life, riding horses as a junior, amateur and then professional for a span of 14 years. Joe Foster recommended that I meet a friend of his, Monica Zucker, four years ago and the rest is history! Monica got me sufficiently hooked on road biking during her Sunday Foxes ride and kept urging me on to try a Tri. I'm in my first year of attempting Tri's and I am having a great time! The support and camaraderie of the club is really amazing. I feel extremely fortunate to have been introduced into and now a part of FMRC.
Janet Fazio
Director of Communications
Janet is honored to join the Board of Directors of Forward Motion Race Club. A long-time mostly casual runner, she joined FMRC in 2008 in hopes of improving her race times. She's cut her times down, and had made wonderful friends. This is a club like no other and she's proud to be part of it.
