Rosaura Tennant

Age Group:
50-54

Sports Bio:
I was born in a very remote area of Costa Rica, in the northern part of the country, bordering Nicaragua. I was very active as a child, but didn’t have the opportunity to practice sports until I reached the age of 19, when I immersed myself into the practice of Martial Arts, and Taekwon-Do became my passion for 11 years. I then joined a swimming club, and had the opportunity to experience different types of races; both short distances in the pool, and long distances in the open water. When I started running, and then cycling (I had to learn to ride a bicycle), I was probably 26-years-old. I immediately started participating in triathlons; most of the races were Olympic distances. I have to admit, “Cycling scares me!” During that time in Costa Rica, I participated in several local races:  5K, 10K, half marathons, and placing most of the time in the Top-10 females. Thinking about running a marathon was something big for me, and I have to confess I was intimidated by those 26.2 miles. Finally, in 2006 I ran my first marathon in Portland, Oregon (3:37), number eight in my age group; followed by the Eugene Marathon, two-times at Nike Women’s Marathon, Boston, and New York. My best marathon time so far is NWM 2009 (3:30… placing 3rd in my age group). Joining Forward Motion Race Club has been the best decision ever.

Favorite Race Experience:
Boston Marathon 2010 - Running Boston was a dream come true, this was a big accomplishment in my running career, and I enjoyed this race from start to finish.

Worst Race Experience:

Davis Stampede Half Marathon 2011 - With a sharp pain in my left leg after mile seven, I had to slow down from 7:11 to 8 and 9 minute miles, jogging or walking, and then continuing to run. I remember Jesus Guijarro telling me, “If you’re in pain you should drop out.”  I told myself, “I’m not a quitter and I know I can finish.” So, I did finish, limping and in severe pain; but smiling at the sight of the finish line. I should have listened to Jesus, and most important, I should have LISTENED TO MY BODY.  (1:42 2AG).

One unique or interesting fact about you or your life:
I am number 13 of 15 children; and I grew up in Costa Rica, far from civilization, without electricity and potable water.  I wasn’t really exposed to any sports, and hadn’t experienced anything related to sports, until I was 19-years-old.

Best training advice ever received:
Less is more; it’s all about quality, not quantity.
Be humble!
