Ed Maier

Sports Bio: In 1998 my co-workers talked me into entering my first organized race, a sprint distance triathlon in Huntington Beach. I got hooked on triathlon and enjoyed continually challenging myself to new distances. I entered my first run race a few years later as part of my training for a Half Ironman. With the arrival of three kids in the past 7 years I have focused my efforts on running. I plan to get more serious with triathlon again, once the family balance allows.

Race Career Highlights:

• 1st place age group in 8 run races in 2010
• Marathons PR of 2:57 in 2010 at Napa Valley Marathon
• Completed the 2004 Boston Marathon
• Half Marathon PR of 1:21
• 10K PR of 36:10
• 5K PR of 17:31
• Completed leg 10 of “The Relay” from Calistoga to Santa Cruz
• Completed Ironman New Zealand in 2002
• Completed 7 Half Ironman Triathlons with a PR of 4:55 at Half Vineman
• Completed several Olympic Distance Triathlons include: Escape from Alcatraz, Wildflower, Pacific Grove, Donner Lake and Envirosports Alcatraz Triathlon
• Completed several sprint distance triathlons with a PR of 1:21 at Tri for Real in 2010
• Completed the Mt. Diablo Bike Challenge (10.8M up Mt. Diablo) in 58:36

What is Your #1 Goal for 2011:
PR in all my run distances (Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K)

Retail Affiliation:
Forward Motion Sports, especially for their expertise in running equipment/attire and their ability to fit me with shoes that work for me and my orthotics.

Why are you a member of FMRC:
FMRC provides a great chance to connect with runners and triathletes who have common interests and goals. Training with others really holds you accountable and keeps you motivated. The best part is that the workouts are only the start. As a FMRC member I am part of a close family that actively gives back to the community. For example, when my wife and I returned home after having our third child, we received prepared meals from one of the amazing club members. You can't beat that!

Running Shoe: Avia Stoltz -  I base my shoe decisions on two things. 1. What do the folks at Forward Motion recommend, and 2. What feels good with my orthotics. These shoes in particular are great on Diablo runs.

Nutrition:
Cytomax during workouts is perfect to keep me hydrated.

What do you eat race morning:
I eat a little cereal, banana and a few bites of toast 3–4 hours before the race. I drink Cytomax up to an hour before the race.

Favorite Training Run:
My favorite run route is the 10 mile Team Chavez loop up Mt. Diablo. The loop starts at Montevista, goes up to Rock City and back down through Macedo Ranch. It has two qualities I love in a run—great views and a nice challenge.

Favorite Training Ride:
Woodside to 84, down to Highway 1, up Tunitas Creek and back down Kings Mountain. This has great views and a nice challenge. Sorry Mt. Diablo, I just can’t get over riding on the Peninsula.

Favorite i-Tunes Play list:
When I am on the trainer, I love upbeat music like Paul Oakenfold or Black Eyed Peas.

Who is your Mentor/Idol?:
Steve Chavez—I dream of catching him on the track one day. Maybe even in a race. That guy has skills!

Favorite Food: Cereal – mostly Natures Path and Kashi. My wife hates that I can’t come back from the grocery store without a box or two or three.

Favorite Quote:
"Focus on the journey, not the destination."
